Christiansen, 25, her hands burned from grabbing the superheated exit handle, finally found another exit.

It was a beautiful morning for a flight; the hazy sunshine spread over Irving and Texas Stadium. But in just a few minutes, the placid beginnings of Delta Flight 1141 would -- as related by the survivors and the witnesses -- give way to a harrowing experience of fear, courage and unanswered questions. Jerry Galloway, 27, was relaxed, settling in for just another flight. There were no clues, no signs that he was about to be swept into a frightening nightmare of fireballs and roaring funnels of black smoke. Galloway, a professional rodeo clown from Colleyville, was on his way to a rodeo in Twin Falls, Idaho. He sat between her and Edmund Fadal, a good friend from Waco who, along with his wife, Marian, 65, was joining the Nixes on their semiannual pleasure trip to Lake Tahoe, Nev. The friends sat and chatted for 30 minutes before the flight crew instructed everyone to buckle up and prepare for takeoff. The plane charged down the runway. Nix, a troop carrier pilot during World War II, sensed that something was wrong the instant the plane took to the air. The jetliner shuddered, and as he stared out the window, Nix could see the plane's flaps vibrating violently. Nix feared the worst. Then, from the rear of the plane, there was an unnerving boom. Eusebio Padillo, 31, had been at work since 5 a. A driver for Flagship Services, Padillo makes shuttle bus runs from downtown to the airport. Just before 9 a. Then I could see the plane exploding and then the flames. There was something terribly awry with the plane just taking off at the airport. And then I saw red sparks starting at the back of the tail, and I thought that that's not its light, that's a fire. They came in like the windows weren't even there. He heard something crumple on the left side of the plane -- it seemed as if the landing gear had simply collapsed. Waugh knew a crash was inevitable. Might happened to glance at the jet. Just a huge blow of fire went up in the sky. He was watching a plane in clear, horrible trouble. Other passengers on Metzig's flight looked on. As the Delta plane wobbled, the passengers on Metzig's plane began encouraging the plane to get into the air. It was very emotional. We were rooting for that pilot to get that plane up. It was probably no more than a foot or 18 inches off the ground,' he said. The Delta plane pulled to the left, narrowly missing Metzig's plane. A searing wall of flames wrapped around the plane. Dennis Selvage of Salt Lake City, seated in Row 17, Seat B, looked on in horror as a fireball quickly danced from the back of the plane to the front. Michelle Christiansen, en route to her parents' silver wedding anniversary celebration and sitting near the emergency exit on Row 20, grabbed for the handle on the door. The heat and fire on the handle were so intense that the 25-year-old yanked her hand back. She couldn't open the door. Around him, people were screaming. Figures in the smoky shadows scrambled through the wreckage. He stumbled for an emergency door and yanked it open. He was enveloped in black smoke. Around him he saw people crawling. Dallas businessman Keith Thompson, 44, dropped his head into his lap when the plane bounced three times during the takeoff. You knew what was happening, but you felt slightly removed from it. Billows of smoke pushed forward from the rear. Thompson saw someone struggling to pry open the emergency hatch, leaning across a couple seated next to the door. The couple were so dazed they were still strapped into their seats. At that point, it seemed like everybody should have been able to get out. He tried to get back in the plane because his wife was across the aisle from him. Fadal was one of those who died in the crash. Stepping out of his station, he could see a plane engulfed in flames. Smoke swirled into the sky. In three minutes, Seadore and other department officers were the first paramedics on the scene. On the way to the crash sight, he scanned the tall grass for bodies. Driving through the ravines, Seadore peered down for people who might have been able to jump to safety. David Carmichael struggled into the cockpit. The restaurant owner from Arkansas was aiming for a hole punched into the plane. It was his only way out. Suddenly, in the smoky darkness, he realized that the plane's pilot was buried under several feet of metal and debris. Carmichael jumped 20 feet to the ground and turned to catch several other passengers. Dan Walker, a 40-year-old Dallas veterinarian on his way to Yellowstone National Park for a fishing trip with his buddies, watched as the plane's metal body splintered and yawned open. He thought he would die a quick death. Instead, Walker found himself heading for the crack and tumbled to the ground. He was thinking about his three sons, ages 7, 10 and 13. He also was thinking about his friends on board -- fellow veterinarians Troy Prater and Joe King. Then I saw Dr. King was trying to get a child. His mother couldn't get him out. He was about 2. Joe got the baby out. When he slid down the side of the airplane, there was some real sharp metal to the left, and he cut his finger off. After we got it bandaged up, he was still trying to help people. I thought about that: If someone asked me to go back to get a child. I don't know if I'd do it. Christiansen, 25, her hands burned from grabbing the superheated exit handle, finally found another exit. She tumbled to the ground and, shocked, she began wandering through the thick grass. Still dazed, unsure of exactly what had interrupted her flight, Ms. Christiansen wove her way toward a road. She flagged down a car and was taken to Harris Methodist H-E-B hospital, where she was treated for burns on her hand and leg. Later, back at the airport terminal, Ms. Jerry Weeks, owner of the Flagship Service shuttle company, arrived on the scene a few minutes after the fireball soared into the sky. He had heard reports over his radio about a major crash. Survivors were stumbling out of the smoke, their clothes singed and tattered. Weeks directed some toward medical help. For a half-dozen others, he started punching numbers on his mobile phone. At the foot of the wreckage, Weeks placed several calls across the country for passengers anxious to alert relatives that they had somehow survived a crash in Dallas. Paul Verheyden, 33, of Duncanville jumped to his feet in the plane, thinking the worst was over. Then he turned around and saw people and flames. As I was trying to get out of the plane, I didn't want to push. Derdeyn immediately notified his department administrator, called in additional staff members and canceled the day's appointments. Christopher Sarvis, a 3-year-old fresh from a visit to Six Flags Over Texas amusement park, turned to his mother, Norma, 32. Flames were ripping through the cabin. Other members of the Sarvis family from Euless -- James, 33, and Allen, 7 months -- were also on board. An odd thought ran through Norma Sarvis' head -- Christopher must have thought he was on the roller coaster. Thanks for your concern. If you leave a message, we'll get back to you. Shortly after the crash, one young woman, bruised and stunned but able to walk away from the wreckage, was brought to the terminal. I don't even know if she's Catholic. Businessmen with attache cases came and went. Guests checked in and out. Delta officials took Geraldine Owens from the Hilton to get new glasses. Hers were shattered when she fell down the wing, escaping from the burning jet. Jerry Galloway, the veteran rodeo man, walked out of the wreckage with a minor case of smoke inhalation. He also walked away with a philosophical attitude.

Galloway, a professional rodeo clown from Colleyville, was on his way to a rodeo in Twin Falls, Idaho. The major event will be the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association world-class competition nightly at 8 at the Grand County Equestrian Center south of Moab off U.
